And this is Leslie Curran saying hello and welcome in the Saviour's name to our gospel broadcast. I'm glad you're joining us today and here to let the Bible speak is the Reverend John Greer. Today I bring your attention to the words of the Apostle Paul in 1st Timothy 1 and verse 15.

He says, this is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. One fact stands out very prominently in this verse and that is there was a time when the Lord Jesus Christ was born. Christ Jesus came into the world.

This great pronouncement of the Apostle contains language that can be traced right back to Jesus Christ himself in his own statements, especially in the gospel of John. Because again and again he referred to himself and John's gospel as having come into the world. He says, for example, I am come a light into the world.

I am come forth from the Father and am come into the world. For this cause came I into the world that I should bear witness. When we think of this kind of language, whether Christ's own words in John's gospel or here in 1 Timothy 1 15 where Paul speaks, we are certainly shown the great truth of the Lord's pre-existence.

Christ Jesus came into the world, which means that he existed beforehand. The incarnation, the birth of Christ at Bethlehem was not the beginning of his existence. Rather, he already existed at the very beginning of all things.

John 1 verse 1 says that the word in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. Furthermore, he also existed before the beginning. In John 17 verse 5, he speaks of the glory which he had with the Father before the world was.

And above all, he existed always in his divine being and in his in his role as the second person of the Trinity, the Lord Jesus Christ existed from all eternity. That is proved by the fact that he's revealed in scripture to be the creator. In John 1 verse 3, it says all things were made by him and without him was not anything made that was made.

And the significance of those words is that he who made all things was himself eternal and uncreated. And therefore, when we think of these marvelous words, Christ Jesus came into the world, we're dealing with someone who is an eternal person and who came forth in the fullness of time and entered into this world. He came willingly.

That is also underlined by this expression, Christ Jesus came into the world. He was not coerced. He was not forced into coming into the world.

He came willingly. He came voluntarily. He was sent by the Father, but only in the sense of the divine commission that he was given.

He was not sent in the sense that he was conscripted to the work that was given him to do. Rather, he came gladly. He came willingly, and he did so out of love for his father, first and foremost.

What Jesus Christ came to do in this world, he did in obedience to his father. He came in order to satisfy the law of his father and meet all the requirements of the justice of his father. He came to make atonement for sin.

He came to satisfy divine holiness. And therefore, the first impact of the obedience of Christ in coming into this world is the satisfaction of a righteous God. But he also came willingly out of love for sinners.

Jesus Christ was given the great goal of saving sinners. And therefore, he came willingly to do that work because he loved them. And he loved them with an everlasting love.

Therefore, he came into the world. He came because he had that great purpose before his blessed mind of saving a people from their sin and redeeming them unto himself. So, we find, therefore, that the Apostle Paul is speaking here of the divine incarnation of Jesus Christ under this kind of language.

Christ Jesus came into the world. But that is also the language of divine intervention. Christ Jesus came into the world.

And the words indicate clearly the fact of divine intervention in the history of the world, divine intervention in human affairs. He came into the world. He intervened in the affairs of men.

And this is summed up by these words. He came into the world. A real intervention in the world of the ungodly to save men from their sins.

It says here, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And when we think about the word there, the word sinners, we are really given a description of the world of fallen humanity. Whenever it says Christ Jesus came into the world, it's not merely a reference to a physical location.

It is rather a reference to the world of humanity in all its lost condition, darkened and benighted by sin, and under the wrath and

curse of Almighty God because of that sin. Therefore, Jesus Christ came into this world of pollution and sin and wickedness and darkness. He came into the world of sinners.

When we think about that word sinners, we are looking at the word that literally refers to the great failure of man to hit the mark. The word for sin, both in the Old and New Testaments, means to miss the mark or to fail to hit the mark. And therefore, the very words that the Bible uses underline the perversity of sinful men in that they err from God's rule and God's standard of righteousness.

The Bible shows that man's failure to conform to God's moral law is comprised of his deliberate acts of transgressing the law of God and breaking the law of God. 1 John 3 verse 4 says sin is transgression of the law. Sin is also comprised of the evil nature that is in the very heart of man, is comprised of the rebellion that resides within his soul, the enmity that is in his mind against God and against the things of God.

So, when the Lord Jesus Christ came into this world, he intervened in a world that was fallen and that was marked in every shape and fashion by sin and by rebellion. But he came, you see, for this great purpose of saving men from their sins. There is divine intention.

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I want you to think about those words today because here we really have the true meaning of the birth of Jesus Christ, the true purpose of his coming into this world. He came to save sinners and yet he could only do that, that is accomplish the goal of saving men by performing the great work that the Lord God his Father sent him to do and that he fully and totally fulfilled and completed when he did come into the world of fallen men.

What was that work? It was the work of giving a perfect obedience to God's holy law. This is, as we saw earlier, what sin really is. Sin is the transgression of God's law and that law, let me tell you, has not been set aside.

That law demands this obedience that I call a perfect obedience. The Lord says through the words of Matthew 22, 37 to 39, that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind. Therefore, the Lord is underlining there that the only way that we can please God is by giving to him that perfect obedience demonstrated by love for him that is full, that is complete, that lacks in no way.

And yet the problem is we cannot give that obedience to God's law. We fall short completely. Romans 3, 23, all have sinned and come short of the glory of God or we have come short of the approval of God.

I want you to consider this carefully in your own heart and mind even this very day. You have fallen short of God's approval. You have not come up to his standard.

You have broken his law. You have violated at time without number. God has set before you what he requires of you.

He requires of you that you do justly, that you love mercy, that you walk humbly. And yet men do not obey that injunction at all. They live in an unjust way.

They are proud and arrogant. They do not have any desire for those things that pertain to the life of godliness and the life of mercy. They go their own way.

They seek to live according to their own dictates and their own notions. And therefore, mankind is a race of lawbreakers. And that means that if Christ is going to save us from our sin, he must answer the law's demands.

And the law has a twofold demand with regard to the saving of the sinner. First of all, it demands a full and perfect obedience by the substitute. By the one who will save men, there must be given a perfect obedience to the letter of the law.

And the Lord Jesus Christ said that he came not to destroy the law, but he came to fulfill it. He said not one jot or tittle would pass away. Rather, he would fulfill it all.

And that's what the Bible shows us. Jesus Christ gave a perfect obedience to God's law. Then he did something else.

He went to the cross. He died the atoning death. He shed his precious blood.

He poured out his life a ransom for many. He satisfied divine justice. He quenched God's wrath.

And therefore, he has fulfilled the law's penalty. He has suffered its penalty completely and utterly. And for that reason, he is able to save sinners.

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And this is how he does it. And if you are going to be saved, there's only one way to be right with God.

That is through the work of Christ. And today, I would urge you to go to Christ and trust him as your Saviour and rest by faith alone in his finished work.
